I went to Kenya with the Nasio Trust in February of this year, and I really enjoyed it and found it to be an incredibly beneficial experience.
My favourite overall part of my trip was visiting St. Irene’s where I played with some of the children and served them lunch. One of the children in particular seemed to really like me, and didn’t let go of my hand the entire time, and I now sponsor her monthly. I love working with children, and it is really refreshing to experience first hand schooling in different environments.
We also visited the GMK medical centre which is next to st Irene’s, where I took blood pressures and oxygen levels of patients. This was beneficial as it allowed me to see the level of medical care offered in a rural community. I shadowed one of the doctors around the centre and answered several questions surrounding basic medical knowledge. This allowed me to gather an understanding of the work that doctors in Kenya do and I was incredibly grateful to have been able to take part in this experience as a whole.
On the Sunday, we went down to st Irene’s and served the children breakfast, and walked up to the church with them. One thing I didn’t know was how different the church experience was in Kenya that in England. It was joyful, lively and exciting, even though there had been a power outage that meant there was no keyboard. Despite this, the church was loud and joyful in praising the lord and truly allowed me to experience the immense faith that christians in Kenya hold.
I visited the Muslim school, where I taught a geography lesson, explaining the differences between Kenya and England. I focused on the town where I live, and printed pictures of my school and house for the students to look at. I also studied the populations of both Kenya and England and explored differences in size of cities and population density. This was an amazing opportunity and has helped me with my application to a college course in education and early years for my next steps in education.
Overall I immensely enjoyed this experience that was granted to me and I would highly recommend taking part in a trip with the Nasio, a truly eye opening experience and changed my life for the better
